Día de los Muertos Ritual Package ©

$129.00

Día de los Muertos – or Day of the Dead – is a widely-celebrated holiday honoring our deceased loved ones on November 1st and 2nd. It is believed that the Aztecs developed the ritual 3,000 years ago, because they believed one should not grieve the loss of a beloved,  rather their lives should be celebrated. The event coincides with the Catholic holidays All Souls Day and All Saints Day, and is therefore a widespread tradition in many cultures. The building of an altar welcomes the return of their spirits to the land of the living once a year with Ofrendas or “offerings.” This package contains many of the most common elements needed to create a traditional altar in your home. The centerpiece of our kit is a unique handmade solid paper skull sculpture, (in Spanish, called Calavera) embellished with hand-painted details and tiny crystals. We are also including a  handmade candle to guide the spirits to the altar,  a miniature Papel Picado (cut paper) banner, (representing Wind and the fragility of life),  a small vial of salt, (representing purity, sometimes sprinkled in the shape of a cross),  traditional copal incense (to burn as symbolic transformation of the physical to the supernatural), a packet of marigold seeds (to symbolize the renewal of life), and a handmade ceramic planting pot. Photos, personal items and favorite foods or beverages are usually added to personalize the memorial.
